Alpkäserei Bergmatt
Jan Beuzekom · Fruttstrasse 49a · 6067 Melchtal
Cheesemaker Jan Beuzekom, born in Menznau, took over Alpkäserei Bergmatt this year. The alpine cheese dairy, located at the foot of Melchsee-Frutt in the idyllic Melchtal (Melch Valley), is at an altitude of 1,050 metres. Alp Bergmatt is the largest Kernser Alp, offering perfect conditions for the production of Sbrinz cheese. The alpine summer lasts from early May to late September. 14 alpine dairy farms, some higher than 2,000 metres, deliver their milk from some 250 cows to Alpkäserei Bergmatt. Jan Beuzekom turns the milk into different high-end cheese products, above all the wonderfully spicy Sbrinz AOP cheese. Ecology is close to Jan’s heart. For example, the by-product from cheesemaking (whey) is used to feed pigs in the farm’s own pens.
